Awkward Confrontation

One thing that is just absolutely unavoidable is awkward confrontation from customers at work. You see, I work in a gigantic refrigerator for my job, and I stock freight, milk, and anything that falls under the category of dairy. Part of my job consists of filling doors full of yogurt from behind. During stocking, customers, of course, will be grabbing the yogurt I just stocked creating an awkward confrontation. Sometimes they ignore me, sometimes I get a fake smile, but today I was caught completely off guard as this girl opened the door, looked me right in my eyes and gave me a HUGE smile. It was one of those smiles that catch you so much by surprise you can’t help but be in a better mood. Then I got to thinking, at first it was “Man, I’m so bored right now, I do this everyday. What can I do to entertain myself?”  Then I realized I’m going to do what that girl did, just maybe to a more extreme point. So, when someone would open up the same door I was working on, id look up, make direct eye contact and smile obnoxiously. Grinning all my pearly whites. Some people laughed, and others looked at me like I was an idiot. So I new I had to tweak my approach. I wanted to spice it up a bit.

There was a perfect opportunity for it. You see, when I’m stocking things sometimes I’m really low to the ground, which allows me to see the customer in the doorway and not vise versa, do to the shelves blocking their view. This sets me up for a perfect “sneak attack”. The opportunity arose; the customer was nonchalantly browsing the yogurt, and had no idea I was in the same door. So, I seized the moment, I put a huge smile on my face, quickly hopped up to eye level with them, which is about 5 shelves up and yelled ,“Hey!! Whatcha lookin for?”  I was expecting maybe a little scare or a jump, but this time I received a look of pure horror. It was like I took typical annoying customer service to a whole new level, and it made this woman want to turn and run for her life. This was the one time I tried it. I may give it another go; maybe I can gain a rep for it.  Be known as the yogurt mongrel that catches you off guard and persistently tries to help you, when no help is needed. haha who knows. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed reading my perspective of this unique moment at work. Thanks for reading. :)
